Exercise Idea for People Who Sit All Day

Sitting for long hours, whether at a desk, in a car, or on the couch, can take a toll on your body. A sedentary lifestyle often leads to muscle imbalances, stiffness, and weakness, especially in the core and lower back. Fortunately, even small amounts of targeted exercise can make a big difference. One effective and time-efficient option is the plank.

Why planks help:
Planks strengthen the core muscles that tend to weaken from prolonged sitting. A strong core supports better posture, reduces back pain, and helps prevent future injuries. Best of all, planks require no equipment and can be done almost anywhere.

How to do a plank:

  1. Start on the floor on your hands and knees. Place your forearms flat on the ground, with elbows directly beneath your shoulders.
  2. Extend your legs straight back so that your body forms a straight line from head to heels. Keep your toes shoulder-width apart.
  3. Engage your core, imagine pulling your belly button toward your spine.
  4. Squeeze your glutes and thighs to maintain stability.
  5. Keep your neck in a neutral position by looking slightly ahead of your hands.
  6. Hold for about 30 seconds, or as long as you can maintain good form. Gradually increase your time as you get stronger.

A quick note:
Before starting any new exercise routine, it’s always wise to consult a doctor or physical therapist, especially if you have any existing medical conditions or pain concerns.

Even just a few minutes a day can counteract the effects of sitting and help you feel stronger, more energized, and better supported throughout your daily routine.
