The Importance of Hip Mobility

Healthy hip mobility is essential for everyone, not just athletes. For athletes, flexible hips improve performance and reduce the risk of injury. For others, strong and mobile hips make everyday movements easier, such as bending, walking, and picking up objects. When hip mobility is limited, other muscles and tendons compensate, which can lead to strain, pain, and even injury over time.

One simple yet effective stretch to improve hip mobility is the Posterior Hip Stretch.

How to do the Posterior Hip Stretch:

  1. Begin on the floor on your hands and knees. Engage your core muscles to support your spine.
  2. Slowly shift your hips back toward your heels, stopping about halfway to avoid sitting all the way down.
  3. Gently move your weight toward one side, shifting over your right or left knee. You should feel a stretch along the outer hip and buttock of the side you move toward.
  4. Hold this position for about 10 seconds, then return to the starting position.
  5. Repeat 10 times on each side.
