Back-to-School Reminder: Backpack Safety Tips

With most schools now back in session for the fall, it's a great time to review an often-overlooked issue—backpack safety. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 10,000 people visit emergency rooms each year due to backpack-related injuries. Improper use can lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain, and even nerve damage.

Here are some simple tips to help keep students safe:

  • Choose a backpack with padding: Look for padded shoulder straps and a cushioned back to reduce pressure on sensitive areas.
  • Check the fit: A backpack should be no wider than the wearer's torso and should sit no lower than the top of the hips. The top of the bag shouldn’t extend above the shoulders, and straps should be snug but not tight.
  • Pack smart: Only include items that are truly necessary. Extra weight adds unnecessary strain.
  • Watch the weight: A full backpack should weigh no more than 15% of the wearer's body weight.

Backpacks are a daily essential, but if not used properly, they can cause long-term issues. If you or someone you know is experiencing back pain after wearing a backpack, these tips may help. If pain persists, we’re here to assess the issue and offer solutions to keep you moving comfortably.
